CONGRESS

The International Congress on Sultan Abdul Hamid II
and His Era on the Occasion of the Centenary of His Death

CONGRESS CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE

Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s reign lasted from the last quarter of the 19th century to the early 20th century (1876-1909), a period of important developments and great changes in the Ottoman Empire as well as in Europe. It is important that we give him an exclusive and important place among the sultans of the late Ottoman era because of the approach to the state and ruling that he employed in order to preserve the Ottoman Empire’s existence under the increasingly difficult conditions in the governance and politics of the Empire as a result of developments in the world and Europe. The Ottoman Empire’s final years, on which Sultan Abdul Hamid II left his mark in many aspects, is of interest not only to historians. This era is also a crucial point in time for the political, economic and socio-cultural changes that took place until the Turkish Republican era and even beyond that up through to today. In this regard, it is necessary to research, understand, discuss, criticise and approach with a broad perspective regarding the various aspects of Sultan Abdul Hamid II and his era. Therefore, it is highly important that this period be examined by historians first and foremost, but also by the experts in other fields such as social history, linguistics, literary history, cultural history, art history, history of architecture, history of medicine and history of education. On the other hand, there are still aspects of this sultan and his period that are yet to be explored. Due to these reasons, in addition to the valuable research undertaken so far, we still need new scientific research that will enable us to better understand Sultan Abdul Hamid II and his period in a more objective light.

With regards to the above points, and as 2018 is the 100th anniversary of Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s passing, the Sultan Abdul Hamid II Research and Application Centre at Yıldız Technical University and the Ataturk Culture, Language & History Higher Institution, the Turkish Historical Society came together in partnership to organise an international event with an interdisciplinary approach that would bring people together who work on this subject in Turkey as well as in the world. As a result, an International Congress will be held wherein esteemed experts will interpret Sultan Abdul Hamid II and his era from different perspectives and they will scientifically examine this crucial period leading up to the foundation of the Turkish Republic and evaluate the effects that are still apparent today.

The proceedings of the “International Congress on Sultan Abdul Hamid II and His Era on the Occasion of the Centenary of His Death” will consist of scientific proceedings regarding Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s personal characteristics, his mentality as a ruler and his politics. Furthermore, an interdisciplinary approach regarding all political, social, economic and cultural aspects of his era and their effects on today will be utilized.
